Using material processes to describe classical iconography, The “Roma” collection finds place at the border between design and fine art. Through gesture and gravity the classical stylistic formula of drapery is not depicted in its idealised way, but rather in its proper materiality, shrouding and forming the object itself. The drapery is abstracted from the human body in order to shed light on the interplay between the expression and representation of reality. The narrative content of the work aims to provoke a sense of wonder mixed with a sensual, yet nostalgic, beauty. Taking advantage of the skeuomorphic qualities of clay, the objects hark back to the classical sculptures of the Baroque period whilst also drawing on a long history of concealment and enigma, from Man Ray to Christo, in a more contemporary setting.
